How to Renew Your Nigerian Passport at Home and Abroad

Renewing your Nigerian passport has become more streamlined, and in some cases, the entire process can be completed within a day! Whether you’re in Nigeria or abroad, understanding the steps involved can save you time and frustration.

Why Passport Renewal is Easier Today

If you’re a Nigerian citizen, you’ve likely encountered bureaucratic challenges when dealing with government agencies. From opening a bank account to registering to vote, official processes often require navigating multiple steps. Fortunately, passport renewal is now more efficient, particularly for passports issued after 2015.

One of the key requirements for renewal is your National Identification Number (NIN). If you obtained your passport after 2015, you likely already have an NIN. If not, you’ll need to visit an enrollment center to register before proceeding with your renewal.

Step-by-Step Guide to Renewing Your Nigerian Passport (Home & Abroad)

  1. Visit the Official Immigration Website
Go to www.immigration.gov.ng to begin your application.
  2. Complete the Renewal Form
Fill out the online form and select your preferred processing center.
  3. Book a Biometric Capture Appointment
Choose a suitable date for your fingerprint and photo capture.
  4. Make Payment
Pay the applicable fees online through the portal.
  5. Gather Required Documents
    You will need the following:

    • Completed application form from www.portal.immigration.gov.ng
    • Letter addressed to “The Assistant Comptroller General, Passport and Other Travel Document, Nigeria Immigration Service, Abuja”
    • Original Nigerian passport
    • Photocopy of passport data page
    • Two recent passport-sized photos
    • Payment receipt
    • Copy of birth certificate
    • Local Government identification certificate
    • Marriage certificate (if applicable)
  6. Submit Documents In Person
Visit your selected immigration office or Nigerian High Commission abroad to submit the required documents and complete biometric capture.

Nigerian Passport Renewal Fees (2025)

Passport Type Validity Cost in Nigeria Cost Abroad
32-page Passport 5 Years ₦35,000 $150
64-page Passport 10 Years ₦70,000 N/A

Important Note: If you’re renewing your passport outside Nigeria, the only available option is the 32-page passport with a 5-year validity, which costs significantly more than renewing within Nigeria due to currency exchange rates.

My Experience Renewing a Nigerian Passport in Kenya

I recently renewed my passport at the Nigerian High Commission in Kenya, and the process was incredibly smooth. The staff were professional and courteous, which was a pleasant surprise given past experiences with Nigerian government offices.

I submitted my documents in person and was guided through the biometric process in a comfortable setting. To my delight, I received a call the next day informing me that my passport was ready for pickup! Typically, the process takes about two working days, but due to an upcoming public holiday, they expedited the release.

Final Thoughts

The Nigerian passport renewal process has significantly improved, especially with the digital portal making applications more accessible. While challenges still exist, particularly with pricing abroad, the process has become more efficient.
